10 - Sweet Symphony

#NaPoWriMo Day 10 and tonight I’ve been writing a free verse inspired by the Random Song Generator giving me a track by RAYE, and autoplay taking me to another in the album, and suddenly I was hooked and looking up the lyrics and then bigger pictures of the cover art and what seems like no time later, here is a free-write stream-of-consciousness. Enjoy the album – I intend to!

Remember that, if you’re a subscriber to my Patreon, you can hear a recording of this piece (and the nine preceding it) there. The link to the relevant post is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/sweet-symphony-155326024

Against a backdrop pf thunderclouds opening to a hint of sunshine beyond, a woman with creamy, tan skin in a skin-tight, low-cut, red satin dress stands om short grass, balanced on one bare foot, leaning her weight against the long rope wound around her upraised arm, face a blank kind of intent. The rope stretches into the sky to pull open a square hatch in the clouds where, in white capital letters, the message THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. is revealed against a summer-blue-sky background. The woman wears a red chiffon scarf draped to hang across her neck and dangle over her back. It, and her shin-length, mahogany hair, appear to be blowing in the wind. A pool of bright light surround the woman and her tug-o-war, and, at the edge of the pool, and directly under the hatch, a single red rose is sprouting from the ground. On closer inspection, the woman is wearing short, skintight, red gloves that match the dress. On even closer inspection, the thunderous sky has a straight indentation running along the whole lower edge, below which smallish, black wheels are visible, and the clouds reveal themselves to have been painted on, the rope casting a strong shadow from the spotlight against it.
Image first this time, since the poem is responding to it, sourced from the artist’s website, and I dearly hope I’m not going to get into trouble for this, as this piece is, essentially, a recommendation…

She flies a kite;
bright above the flat
land, she opens a door
to impossibility.
She has carved a blue-white
place beyond the tumult,
she is saying ‘This too will pass.
but ask yourself if there’s a way
to make it hurry up, come on.’

‘See me: I am red against the green, the
grey, I am day in night, and
night in day, bathing in contradiction,
strong arms straining against the
gravity of the situation, dazzling in
satin, not just waiting for it to
happen. I demand happiness, and
I will lean my whole weight into this.’

It is theatre, my dear – it is all
a show, and you should know that,
on closer inspection, the clouds are
a flat on wheels, the light too
bright and focused to be anything but
electrical. But the woman glimmers,
real as red against green against grey,
saying, ‘I stood on one foot for this,
I wrote my heart into the lyrics
underpinning it, everything is as palpable
as the feelings invoked by my voice,
my words, the soar and surge of chorus,
don’t ignore this, it can contain hope.’

And so this barely edited free write
takes flight, despite any misgivings,
singing home the lingering visions
inflicted on me, joyfully, carrying a
piece of blue dutifully with me.
The grass will rebound from under
the wheels, the bare feet; the satin
will lose its heat and uncrease, but
these feelings remain real, and
that’s a gift worth writing home about.

2021.11 Box

Over an hour later, I’m waist-deep in Google when you come in.
And you’re immediately excited: You know what that is?!
you sign. I sigh, resigned, try gesturing to my
many open tabs but you’re entranced: Beautiful.

I knock the table, sagging a sarcastic Heavy! your way
baiting inevitable rolled eyes, while you run entranced fingers over
dusty textures that this heathen sees as merely mechanical,
absolutely prepped now to receive a lecture.

Your colour’s high as we fumble for common concepts,
collecting better understanding as your enthusiasm
absolutely tests my resistance. Before I know it, your itchy digits
have collected instruments and I’m witnessing disembowelment.

You hand me the isoprop. Why me? I immediately frown.
You clown a smirk, and I gather from the resultant smug flicks
of intelligence that you’d hate to deprive me of such a unique
experience (git) before twisting the dials’ backsides my way.

And, damnit, you’re right. Nothing in my life is quite this concrete,
the discrete clunks of the hunks of Bakelite and metal
melding with the stink of alcohol, the smooth, shining movements
freed from imperfection loosing something else in me.

Our eyes meet, and you grin a gotcha, which I acknowledge
on my own roll of eyes and you smile, sign that we can reconnect
this elegant bit of history to itself and present tense,
because next you’re going to demonstrate how well it holds its place.

The thing hums its untempered ohms in somewhat smug digits
of undiminished calibration and I nod proper humility
to it and you, shining in the dimness of my tiny office,
wonder how to catalogue and categorise, and if it’s too late.

This was from the Day 11 prompt to write something inspired by the results of the Science Museum random object search and what came up was this little beauty. Subsequent wading through enthusiasts and this curiously entrancing teardown and testing video gave us this poem, for some reason!

A photograph of a scientific object on a stark, off-white background. The caption in the top, left-hand corner reads "Decade resistance type A-25-F, no. 245301 by Muirh 1989-1040". The object is a dark wooden box, lightly scratched and dusty on top where a black, Bakelite surface fastened to the wooden base with black screws holds three black-painted metal connection hubs (I don't know the right language, sorry!), protected by black, screw-top caps sit alongside three large, Bakelite dials labelled faintly in numbers up to ten. Written on the surface in faint, silvery, sans serif print are the phrases: "Muirhead & Co. Ltd. No. 245301", "MUIRHEAD" in a box and "Decade resistance type A-25-F". stencilled on in white, seriffed capitals is the phrase "Test Room".
A Muirhead Decade Resistance Box, named for the dials marked 1-10 moving in tens, hundreds, and 1000s of ohms

2019.4 Ghost Tour

“Will you cover for me?” I’m helpless, delving into a set of well-worn expressions, shunning the stutter he beckons, projecting: Yeah, I reckon. “Listen,” he says, “I owe you one.” At this point, more like twenty, a reckoning that’s chasing propriety into an early grave. A new voice: “Step lively,” says Greg, head a conspiracy tilt past the fire hatch and we scurry, him stubbing, me shrugging, Greg’s gaze a spinning speculation I nudge from him. “Madame’s on the march,” he confides. I sigh. “No closer to the prize?” My turn to roll my eyes, grab regulation headgear, unprop the door while trawling for witticisms. Zilch. “There’s always next time.” “Sure, love. Sure.” We watch as he darts ahead.

Tip-toeing upstage,
We are mismatched murderers
Longing for a break.

Over to our old friend the random line generator for inspiration for this not-very-strict haibun, Words generated were: cover, march, listen, tip, upstage, point, chase, ghosts.

2018.18 Three Card Draw

IV The Emperor

Every element is carefully selected, from the rams’ heads to the shades and shapes of his draperies. He is bulked and bulwarked, encased in ridged, rigid materials from crown to spurs. Everything is gorgeous, from gorge view to gorget, and preparation is everything; thin-lipped, narrow-eyed, he is unfond of surprises.

He waits, gripped in dread
Battles the creep of ageing
Less feared than fearing.

6 of Wands, reversed

Dread Emperor I have…
Dread…
(Dread)

So, my liege, a funny thing happened
On the way to the battle
And.

No.

Bravely caparisoned and thronged we strode
High were our hearts and strong our voices
Many who cheered us along our road
Blue were the skies with a myriad choices.

Cut to the chase. I think he’d…
He needs to.
I’ll.

Fear now follows fear
A new day beckons the land
The wall has fallen.

8 of pentacles

No matter what occurs, the sky never actually falls. It calls: blue, grey, white, star-sparkling, or rain-blessing. The sky knows its own business; a kind of competence that only the masterful possess. Gaze focused, intent on craft, this one spins out protection, carves calmly the shape that turns back indignities into equality, perfectly balanced.

Empires creak and fall
Wisdom rises to artful
And work still goes on.
