2020.14 Baking. Grounded.

Inspired by the Silver Leaf Poetry prompt for Day 16 (“Write a letter to an inanimate object”), but actually following an exercise by @tina_sederholm where you address a person as though an inanimate object, I decided that, for once, I would write it to someone I actually liked:

You are a terracotta flowerpot,
Sturdy, not particularly large at first view,
But surprisingly capacious.
You define yourself by the things that you produce,
Acting as though your largest,
Longest project, green shoots sprouting
In all sorts of glorious (and troublesome) directions now,
Will naturally overshadow you.
Multifarious nutritious things
Owe their starts to your solidity.
Even when you appear empty, you resonate
Potential, making a glorious chime
When something strikes you,
However gently.

You are, by dictionary definition,
Porous. Absorbing many things.
According to Wikipedia,
Terracotta is only named for practicalities
(Pipes, tiles, pots, things to take the weather),
Never the things to touch the
Potter’s wheel, to dance and whirl,
Then sit still forever, martyrs to dust.
Sometimes glazed, sometimes rough,
Surprisingly tough, taking a variety of shades,
Sometimes brightly painted,
Other times revelling in your natural hue,
You exude brightness, even in the darkest times.

You have known earth, and water,
Lay quietly for a long time.
You were brought into the air,
Given shape by clever, loving hands,
Come to your first strength
By going through the fire,
Your colour coming from the iron you carry
In quietly busy hands.
I once told you about your steely core,
Your blush proving that
As much as your ringing tone.

In your time you’ve rescued
Many living things that would otherwise
Have choked or starved,
And doubtless will again, and again,
Lending your strength and curve
To preserving and lifting the burgeoning
Into something wonderful.
There are many plastic imitations out there,
That do their best,
But they are not you,
Would never survive what you have,
And – you hope – will never need to.
And when it comes to the next fresh, green thing,
Sometimes flowery, sometimes fruity,
That you bring forth,
I look forward to telling you:
It’s beautiful.
Because it will be.
Because it always is.
Because you are.

2018.5 Ursa Major

We are in the carpark, looking up;
The sky is smeared with city lights
And I remember a darker, brighter childhood,
Or maybe just sharper eyes.

I spot the Plough, point it out.
It is the only thing I know apart from
Out-of-season Orion.
It would be good to see Cassiopeia,
Caput Draconis, Böotes, remember again
How to nominate North, even to spot my own star sign,
For comedy effect, of course.

We neither of us seem keen to steer away;
Our drifting conversation moves at a
Night-long pace, a deceptively slow 600mph,
Full of distant glimmerings we do our best to
Capture with familiar names and tales of
Faithless lovers, vengeful mothers,
Heroes, followers, and monsters.

How will we navigate these waters?
Column of fire or column of smoke?
Parched and starving,
We drink each other’s laughter,
Eat stories, draw connections - point to point,
Perspectives drawing symbols in what feels like
Holy fire, tonight.

Hushhh, says the city, tires on tarmac,
Even now, even here.
And I want to take you with me to true dark,
Thronged with fox call, owl cry,
Wind aria and chorus of branches, grass, ivy,
Lively with the sky’s wildfire,
Sing songs together to the dark-bright lovers
Who have long-since died,
And grace us with their gasping light.

2018.1 - Spatchcock

It’s not often I talk about this,
The hiss of withdrawal enough of a
Buffer, buttressed with smiles, and
All the while I’m cataloguing, projecting,
Protecting, soothing, smoothing the air between us:
Must be seen serene, seamless.

“Are you all right?”
A smile lights me - too tight, they’ll spot
It’s not enough, and I can shore up my rebuff,
Bluff standing for honest,
Best bluster this one out,
Doubtless testing everything about us.

“I’m sorry!”
“That’s all right!” It’s not, see -
Careless normality has creased me;
I’ll lease three nights to regret again,
And yet I can’t. I can’t forego. I won’t…
No - I’ve sacrificed enough to chance.

I’ll dance instead of sitting still;
I’ll thrill to late nights and pay the price;
I’ll eat my fill and do it all again,
And deign to fuck regret, and fuck it to a standstill,
Grandiose and canted, cheat my way through ill health;
A wealth of memories will grace my final resting place.

I’ll say: “Just a twinge. I’ll live. Just hug me gentler
“Next time, eh?”
And they will rearrange their expectations,
Bend exasperation the way of my genetic assay, smile
While fending and feeding their own demons,
None of which, it would appear, are my responsibility.

I may have mentioned before, but I have a chronic condition known as Hypermobility Syndrome, and it means that even a simple hug can bugger my neck/ shoulder/ back for a few days if everyone’s not careful. Also: I like dancing, and the way I dance probably isn't great for fucked-up joints, but hey…

2016.18 Conclusion

I've counted them up, and I've already written 33 poems this month.  Between #napowrimo entries, #poetrytogo commissions, random birthday card inserts, and "write me a haiku about having my hair cut" challenges, I've done over the amount required for me to "pass" NaPoWriMo.

And yet.  Yet I've given myself a barrel of grief over not doing it properly.

And luckily, some good people were there to tell me why, in the kindest terms possible, that's just nonsense. Weirdly, it's what I would have told them myself, were the roles reversed.  One to try to remember, eh?

This one's for them/ you:

It's been quite a difficult session,
What with being in thrall of obsession -
It's hard to find time
For good, shorter rhymes,
When you're learning a show - did I mention?

My head's full of timings and edits,
And "Is that how they would have said it?"s,
But if I scribble more,
Quickly ramp up my score,
This might still redound to my credit.

If I stay up 'til late in the night
And tie myself down just to write,
I might feel some pride
And no longer deride
These efforts I deem far too slight.

But you intervened - some of my friends -
And took time to kindly amend
My self-image so low,
Saying "time to let go -
With just one, you've still won, in the end."

See, turns out it's just me who sees failure,
Who's forcibly tucked in my tail, yeah.
I'll stop kicking myself -
It's just bad for my health -
And indulge in some kinder behaviour.

2015.14 - Save My Soul

Don't go.
I used to make you laugh,
Dizzy and late,
Turning through degrees
Of definition
'til we rotated into friends

Don't leave.
Remember the time
We sang you to tears
And you saw my other side,
Binding music into
Another rung in our DNA

Don't turn away.
Life crimped you early,
Dealt you a set of marked cards
And cast-iron boots,
But you marked your own path,
Carved chaos into compassion,
And learned how to stomp.

Just listen.
You sent me a text once,
That I treasured immeasurably,
Told me I was worth remembrance
So I'll send back that love,
Enfolded over years,
Softened in its creases
Where I unwrapped
And rewrapped its
Five-word package.

Please stay.
Because we value you
As more than all your pain.
Because we bear your mark in us,
Bright as birdsong
Where your love touched.

Just one more day.
And one more step.
And one more laugh.
And one more text.

"Don't forget:
"You are awesome."

#13 River Glass

This will have to stay cryptic until I can take pictures that do this justice...

I was given a piece of old bottle for my birthday by someone who clearly knows me well...! :) Picture below

***

For two weeks I've kept
Friendship in a box,
Knocked and slightly tattered,
Clattered in my bag,
Tags and pretty string
Things of the past.

Soft green paper
Makes a bed of moss,
Tossed weight
Cradled in kindness
Mild and implacable as water.

The outer side is clouded,
Gouged with ribs,
Gripping, mysterious grooves;
Smooth inside,
Meanwhile, fits my thumb,
Humbles time,
Chimes truths to comfort.

Sand and water
Walked in air,
Shared tales
Regaling
Changes.

And I keep friendship
In a box,
Pocket history,
Listen.
